How to Apply for Long-term Disability

One question we get a lot is: how do I apply for long-term disability benefits? Generally, you’ll reach out to your long-term disability carrier and ask for an application. Filling out the online application or one by hand is how you start the process. There will often be an interview thereafter, either in person or on the phone. You want to make sure that you have a good list of all of your doctors to share. You will sign a HIPAA authorization so that the insurance company can obtain all your medical records on your behalf to get everything started behind the scenes.

Often, these applications can take several months to go through, so you should be prepared for some time without benefits while your application is processed.
