We get a lot of calls from cyclists who get hit on the road, who are wondering if their car insurance covers them for an accident when hit by a car on the road.
These two things often go together, but it depends on the circumstance. If another driver hits them, the at-fault driver’s auto insurance should cover the damage to their property as well as bodily injury damage. However, if they were the ones at fault, their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance may cover it, depending on the policy. However, an injury claim on a homeowner’s policy may not be payable.
What happens if a cyclist gets hit and it’s a hit-and-run or the driver who hit a cyclist doesn’t have insurance? What insurance covers the claim, then?
If the bicyclist has an auto insurance policy, there’s a good chance that their under-insured or on-insured motorist insurance will cover the damages. Even if the bicyclist is not at fault, their auto coverage could kick in to help with an accident. It is recommended that every cyclist should have at least $100,000.00 in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on their auto insurance.
