What Role Does My Employer Play in My Long-Term Disability Benefits Claim?

What Role Does My Employer Play in My Long-Term Disability Benefits Claim?

Employers are not required to provide long-term disability coverage to their employees, but about half of large and mid-sized employers do offer it for their employees as part of their benefit package. In other cases, employers may distribute information about private LTD insurance policies, but may not pay any of the premiums. Employees then have the option to pay for this coverage, and employers often will deduct the premiums from their paychecks as a courtesy.

Employer-provided long-term disability benefits plans do not involve your employer as much as you might think. Although your employer may pay the full premiums for you to have LTD coverage, your employer is not the decisionmaker on your claim. Instead, the insurance company from whom the employer has purchased the policy makes the decisions on the claims that employees file.

The employer’s primary role is to provide employees with information about the plan, including a copy of the policy and any forms necessary to make a claim. Beyond that information, the employer has little to do with the claims process.

While the requirements may vary from one insurance company to the next, applications for long-term disability benefits typically consist of three forms: one for the claimant, one for the claimant’s treating physician, and one for the employer. The employer’s form is usually pretty simple. The form requires your employer to list your job duties, your job title, your salary, and the last date that you worked. In many cases, the employer will attach a copy of your job description to the form.
