What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Licensed clinical psychologists often conduct neuropsychological evaluations to determine if there are any neurological reasons why certain activities might be challenging for people, including the ability to work or perform specific work-related tasks. The purpose of this evaluation is to identify anything that prevents you from working or engaging in other activities and to formulate a personalized plan for overcoming these barriers.

Some of the skills that a neuropsychological exam measures include:

  • Cognitive abilities
  • Academic skills
  • Social or emotional functioning
  • Behavior, including attention and concentration skills
  • Executive functioning, or applying knowledge

More specifically, the evaluation often measures reasoning, processing speed, memory, motor skills, language, emotional functioning, reading, writing, math, and more. In addition to measuring an adult’s ability to function in the workplace and complete assigned tasks, psychologists also may use the test to determine the best approach for helping children succeed in school.

In the context of a claim for long-term disability benefits, your treating physician or counselor may suggest that you undergo such an exam. In some cases, the results of this evaluation can help your physician arrive at a proper diagnosis. Some people undergo these exams to establish a baseline before they have medical treatment or procedures that might impact their neurological functioning. They then repeat the test after the treatment or surgery has occurred to see how the treatment affected the test results.

The insurance company that is evaluating your claim also may request that you undergo this evaluation. The results of the exam can give all parties involved a clearer picture of your capabilities and whether you can perform your job or any type of job.
