Long-term disability insurance policies differ in determining when a disability becomes a “long-term” disability as opposed to “short-term” disability. In many cases, for instance, a long-term disability insurance policy will establish an elimination or waiting period of three to six months. For individuals with both short and long-term disability insurance coverage, the waiting period usually falls under the short-term disability insurance policy. Once the waiting period expires, then the person becomes eligible for long-term disability benefits. In this example, then, the disabling medical condition or injury does not become “long-term” for long-term disability benefits until the waiting period has expired, however long that might be.
Typically, long-term disabilities are those that make you unable to perform your job duties for a relatively substantial period. These disabilities include chronic illnesses, neurological disorders, and some diseases. Some common examples of conditions that may qualify as long-term disabilities include:
· Cancer
· Parkinson’s Disease
· Multiple Sclerosis
· Lupus and other autoimmune disorders
· Degenerative disc disease
Of course, even these severe conditions do not automatically result in long-term disability benefits. Various factors can impact whether a situation merits eligibility for long-term disability benefits, such as the nature and extent of the job duties for the individual’s position, the kind of impairments or symptoms that the condition causes, and the long-term prognosis of the disorder or disease. Furthermore, every disability insurance company is different. As a result, a condition that easily might qualify you for long-term disability benefits under one policy might not qualify you at all under another policy. Due to the myriad of facts that can impact analysis of your medical conditions under your insurance policy, getting legal advice may be crucial to a successful claim.
