Earlier this year, PeopleForBikes published its 2019 for the most bikeable cities in the U.S. PeopleForBikes used data from surveys, the Bicycle Network Analysis, the U.S. Census, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, and Sports Marketing Surveys to rate the bikeability of cities based on the five questions that analyzed ridership, safety, network, acceleration, and reach.

- How easy is it for people to get around on a bike?
- How fast is the network of bike trails and routes growing and expanding?
- How effective is the bike network to access all the neighborhoods in the community?
Top-rated cities scored well across all five questions. The top-scoring cities have a network of bike infrastructure that separates bikes from cars and improves safety for cyclists. Furthermore, these cities cultivate a culture that encourages people of all ages and walks of life to ride bikes.
California is often seen as a leader in efforts to increase biking among all Americans. Still, no California cities made the 2019 top ten most bikeable cities list. The 2019 list listed Santa Barbara, CA, as one of the best cities for bicycling in the state of California, along with Santa Monica, Ventura, Lompoc, Goleta, Santa Maria, Long Beach, Stanford, Buellton, Davis, San Francisco, and Mill Valley.
In 2018, the PlacesforBikes rating system named San Diego as one of the top five bikeable large cities in the U.S., and Santa Monica as one of the top five most bikeable small cities. Davis weighed in at number five overall, and San Francisco was named number ten. Rounding out the top 25 were Palo Alto and Santa Cruz, with Oakland falling just short of the top 25.
