The San Francisco Chronicle recently reported on a new initiative by the Bay Area Outreach & Recreational Program (BORP) at Golden Gate Park. BORP has the country’s largest and most diverse collection of cycles, with over 50 types of cycles that individuals with physical disabilities can use. BORP recently has begun making adaptive cycles available for use by the public at Golden Gate Park on Sundays through November from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During these scheduled times, the streets are closed off from traffic. In the future, BORP intends to establish a similar program on Thursdays at the Embarcadero Waterfront. Other partners in this project include Lyft, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, and the San Francisco MTA.
At these events, BORP staff members will be on hand to train and assist riders with upright and recumbent handcycles, adaptive recumbent trikes, and a side-by-side tandem bike. Available adaptive equipment includes supportive pedals, seats, and straps, as well as hand pedals as needed.
While the closure of the streets during these events will help protect disabled cyclists, cyclists in other areas of the city do not always enjoy such protections. As many San Francisco residents use bicycles for commuting and transportation purposes, riding alongside motor vehicle traffic is necessary. Unfortunately, heavy traffic and careless motorists may not ensure the rights of nearby bicyclists, which can result in accidents causing catastrophic injuries.
